Class Parents

Class parents are essential in keeping the Locke community connected. They help inform families about school happenings, from bake sales and field trips to teachers' wish lists and school performances. There's no prior experience required--you just need to be willing to stay engaged, share information, and stay connected to the people in your class when you can.

What class parents do

  • Pass along school news to your class. Information flows from the Administration and/or PTA to class parents, and from class parents to families. 

  • Run your class WhatsApp group. You'll be an admin of your class's group (more on that below).

  • Partner with your class teacher. Early in the year, ask your teacher for 10 minutes to hear what they'd actually find helpful — every classroom is different.

  • Get to know your families. Ask your teacher for the class list, introduce yourself, and help new families find their footing where possible.

  • Rally volunteers when events come up. Events run on sign-up sheets. Class parents share them with their class and help fill the gaps.

  • Coordinate winter and end-of-year teacher gifts for your class.

Being a class parent is incredibly manageable. Aside from WhatsApp, there are optional check-in meetings with other class parents throughout the year, which typically take place after drop-off in person or on Zoom. These meetings are opportunities to meet other class parents and ask questions and brainstorm opportunities.

WhatsApp groups

There are two primary Whatsapp groups for class parents: 

  • The class parents group — this group includes all class parents plus PTA leadership. This is where information starts.

  • Your class group — you and the families in your child's class. You're an admin here, and you're the one who carries news from the Class Parents group into it.

Our PTA WhatsApp admin will help get every class group set up correctly and make sure class parents have admin access. You'll review our PTA WhatsApp guidelines when you join, so you'll know how you can help keep your class group communications positive, courteous, and respectful. (Some conversations are best held in a different forum.)

You'll be added to the Class Parents group after an initial fall kick-off meeting.

How to sign up

  1. Fill out the Volunteer Interest Form. It takes a couple of minutes and asks whether you're interested in being a class parent, what else you might want to help with, and what skills you'd bring. You can also scan the QR codes around the school or stop by our volunteer table at Locke on the Block.

  2. Come to the Class Parent Kickoff in October. We'll walk through the role, answer questions, and get you connected.

  3. Then the fun part. Join the Class Parents WhatsApp group, connect with your teacher, get your class list, and introduce yourself to your families.

Please sign up by Friday, September 25th. We want class parents in place before the October kickoff so everyone has time to settle in before the year gets busy. 

 

Returning class parents: we're assuming you're staying on, and we're glad to have you. If you'd rather step back this year, just let us know by the September 25th deadline — no hard feelings.
